The man bent over his guitar,
A shearsman of sorts. The day was green.
They said, "You have a blue guitar,
You do not play things as they are."
The man replied, "Things as they are
Are changed upon the blue guitar."
And they said then, "But play, you must,
A tune beyond us, yet ourselves,
A tune upon the blue guitar
Of things exactly as they are."

Poëzie is als schilderkunst: het ene gedicht/schilderij zal je beter bevallen als je er dichtbij staat, het andere als je op enige afstand staat.
Deze principiële gelijkstelling van literatuur en schilderkunst heeft grote gevolgen gehad voor de theorievorming met betrekking tot zowel literatuur als beeldende kunst in de Renaissance, Maniërisme en Barok:
De poëzie moest een sprekend schilderij zijn; een schilderij is een stom gedicht. Schilderkunst werd besproken en beoordeeld als woordenloze poëzie en de poëzie als sprekende schilderkunst.
